Colette is coming to the Big Apple–courtesy of Gap.

The San

Francisco-based retailer has commissioned the renowned Paris boutique to create a one-month installation in its rotating Gap concept store adjacent to its Fifth Avenue flagship

at 54th Street.

Dubbed "Colette x Gap," the shop, Colette’s first store in the U.S., will be open from September 6 through October 5.

Gentrification

encompasses a number of processes of change in demographics, land uses and building conditions in an area, accompanied by rapid increase in a neighborhood’s property prices and

influx of investment and physical remodelling and renovation. In many cases, the lower-income residents who originally lived in the neighborhood have to move out of the

neighborhood because they can no longer afford to live there. Sound familiar?

A trend is something that somehow becomes popular within mainstream society over a long

period of time. It is the direction of a sequence of events that has some momentum and durability.

A fad is something that is very popular with a small group of people

for a short period of time.

Despite the negative or counterproductive results of crazes and fads, some companies still in business today began by purposely or

accidentally creating a fad or craze.

this online: Antwerp, Belgium-based one-year-old sculp(IT) is a partnership of two architects, Pieter Peerlings and Silvia Mertens. They have recently completed a clever office,

residence and studio for themselves in what they call “Antwerp’s narrowest house” located in Anwerp’s former red-light district. They took a 2.4-meter (7 feet 10 inches) wide

space between two buildings, erected a steel skeleton in it and installed four wooden floors, one each for work, dining, relaxing and sleeping, plus a bath tub on the

roof.

Future Cities: Sustainable Solutions,

Radical Designs

We stand at a crossroads. Cities must change radically to achieve long-term sustainability. Energy, food and water sources, transportation systems and

basic infrastructure, must all adapt to emerging pressures from climate change, dwindling resources and growing urban populations.

How will we meet this immense

challenge? In a program that is part celebration of human ingenuity and part stark reminder of the problems we face, urban planner Peter Head, architects Blaine Brownell and

Mitchell Joachim, environmentalist Majora Carter, and microbiologist Dickson Despommier lay out radical blueprints and innovative solutions as they imagine housing, feeding,

transporting and sustaining city dwellers of the not too distant future. The event is moderated by President of the Aspen Institute and noted journalist, Walter

Isaacson.

Friday, May 30, 8:00 PM - 9:30 PM , NYU - Kimmel Center for University Life
