*FYI Artist Feature: Vintage Vandalizm

FYI: Peace, state your name.
Jaz: Jasmin Rodriguez, but I’m also known as Vintage Vandalizm.
FYI: Tell us about yourself.
Jaz: Well, I’m an artist. I have studied all aspects of art and am still learning [a thing or two]. I am specifically known for my photographs and paintings. But if it [relates to] art - I‘ve done almost everything.
FYI: How did you come up with the name Vintage Vandalizm?
Jaz: Throughout High School, I used to shop in vintage stores so I could somehow stand out [and avoid following] the trends. Vintage clothing is not only rare because of age, [but] the quality and creativity is a lot better then modern clothing. So, one day I was home drawing for a project in school and thought to myself “paper is so boring” and decided to do my project on a blazer I got at the Salvation Army. I wore it to school as my project and everyone loved it! From there on, I started racking up on vintage garments to paint on, started selling them, got introduced to MySpace and came up with the name Vintage Vandalizm, which will one day be the name of my very own vintage store.
FYI: Where do you get your inspiration?
Jaz: I get my inspiration from history. I have always [been] fascinated by the elegance of women in the 1950’s. I also have always been drawn to the history of Women’s Rights. The women I paint are always beautiful and powerful in character.
FYI: Any collaborations?
Jaz: I’m working on it. My paintings were recently viewed in an Art Show in Brooklyn. It was definitely an experience to see what the public thought of my work - they loved it! If I keep creating stepping stones, I’m sure a collaboration is in my future.
FYI: What is your view on the Art, Fashion and Music industries?
Jaz: Art cannot be measured, but I have never understood many paintings I have seen sell for millions of dollars. Paint splatters and mere pencil marks will never really move me, but beauty is definitely in thee eye of the beholder. “Someone’s trash is someone else’s treasure”. As far as Fashion goes, I think Fashion is definitely not what it used to be. To me, trends are like drugs and everyone is too high to realize that they look just like everyone else. I understand there are people with there own fashion sense who will look similar to the next person, but you usually know who’s doing it for cool points and who does it naturally. New York has become a Zombie nation of trend adapters. Fashion’s standards are as low as the music industry, because you don’t need talent to be “cool”. All you have to do is look “cool” and you get the job [done], you don’t even need to be talented. Singers get the fame, while their ghost writers go unnoticed. Music is a way to reach the people, I just wish the music industry had more important things to say other then “party like a rockstar”, or “this is why I’m hot”. It sells, but it’s just a reminder of the music industry’s low standards.
FYI: What is your role at GRBG/garbege as the Creative Director for Women’s Wear?
Jaz: My role is to create a women’s line for girls who are not afraid to be original. GRBG/garbege is not afraid to be ORIGINAL. I want to incorporate that in this line - for the women who don’t follow trends. The women who are powerful in thought, and don’t mind being powerful in presence.
FYI: What brands/companies do you admire the most?
Jaz: GRBG because the designs are thought provoking. People who wear it understand it. Some people don’t [understand the stories, but love] the style. I see many tee shirt lines that have no substance, all they need is a “sneaker” or the word “fresh” on [it] and it sells. Personally, I think that’s LAME. Its sad that everyone in NYC is “FRESH” or “DOPE” , but not “ORIGINAL”. I can’t help but have passion for clothing that actually has a message. 1SoulDesigns is another tee shirt line I admire, simply because the messages they provide on there tees have to do with history and politics. Every tee stands for something.
FYI: Thanks for your time, energy and support. Looking forward to seeing Vintage Vandalizm flood the streets! Any shout outs?
Jaz: Just a shout out to everyone who supports my vision and everyone who has a mind of there own…without it you don’t matter.
